The Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award 2017

Congratulations to our own, R. Bruce Shack, MD, Professor and Dean for the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga.  He was presented the Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, his alma mater, as part of its graduation ceremonies on June 3, 2017.


Dr. Shack graduated from Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed a Surgery Internship and his Plastic Surgery Residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.


Dr. Shack served as Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Center and at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, both in Baltimore, before joining the faculty of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 1982. He was named Chair of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Vanderbilt in 1997, serving almost 20 years in that role before moving to Chattanooga to become Dean for our campus in mid-November 2016.
