New Resident and Fellow Physicians begin Training
University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga and Erlanger Health System
July 1, 2017

As in other major cities and smaller communities that have "teaching hospitals," July 1 in Chattanooga, Tennessee marks a time-honored tradition of initiating the post medical school training of more than 50 young physicians each year.  Medical school diplomas have already been presented -- the once "medical students" are now real physicians, responsible for the care and treatment of real patients.  Now they are "doctors."  However, they are still very much students and their education and their training has just entered a new phase -- residency training.  Residency training varies from three to eight years, depending upon the specialty. A few more seasoned physicians are also entering subspecialty training in fellowships after completing their initial residency programs.

This year on July 1 we have 51 new faces in our Residency and Fellowship Programs at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga with a few more fellows joining us by August 1.  The primary affiliated hospital in which their training occurs is Erlanger Health System -- the only major teaching hospital within a 100-mile radius of Chattanooga.  These physicians come from medical schools across the country and even the globe -- all seeking to become physicians for our FUTure as well as for our current community.  They will be involved in a combination of clinical practice, didactics learning sessions, and scholarly activity -- clinical research as well as patient safety and quality improvement projects.  They will be supervised and guided by physician faculty and leaders also committed to serving the community and furthering the practice of quality, safe, patient-centered health care.
