Medical Student EducationEach year approximately 150 medical students from schools across the United States elect clinical rotations at the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga. Our primary clinical training site and affiliated hospital is the Erlanger Health System. Medical students are considered part of the health care team and receive individualized attention from faculty. Many of our students remain in Chattanooga for residency training as a direct result of their elective rotations.
The UT College of Medicine Chattanooga offers training to junior and senior medical students from the University of Tennessee, Memphis, as well as to senior medical students from other U.S. medical schools. UT students from Memphis are able to elect their entire clinical training in the last two years any UT campus. Chattanooga offers all required rotations except Neurology and Psychiatry Clerkships which are only available in Memphis. Junior students from Memphis are able to participate in required Core Clerkships (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Surgery, and Ambulatory Medicine). Students from Memphis may also elect other required rotations in Chattanooga: Medicine Specialties Clerkship, Surgical Subspecialties Clerkship, and the Patient Safety/Quality Improvement Clerkship. In addition, the Chattanooga campus offers 42 additional specialty and subspecialty electives for seniors throughout the U.S.
Non-UT students may elect up to three four-week rotations in Chattanooga during their senior year. They must meet eligibility requirements in accordance with UT and individual department guidelines.
With funding from Erlanger, UT and non-UT medical students are provided meals and parking at no cost during rotations, as well as 24-hour access to the Erlanger Medical Library. Housing is provided by Erlanger at no charge to the student, on a space available basis, in 17 two-bedroom, modestly furnished units at the Autumn Brook Apartments in Hixson. First priority is to third year students, second priority is to fourth year UT students, and then housing as available to visiting fourth year students. Utilities are paid by Erlanger.
