PED3-4100 Goals & Objectives

PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY

 

Goals:  This elective will provide the senior medical student with an immersion experience in outpatient pediatric hematology and oncology.

Objectives:

  1. Students will learn appropriate diagnostic workup for single and multiple-line cytopenias, lymphadenopathy, coagulation disorders, and childhood malignancies.
  2. Students will have the opportunity to see (and in some cases perform) lumbar puncture and intrathecal chemotherapy administration, central venous catheter access and care, and bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.
  3. Individual  training is given in the interpretation of common findings on peripheral blood smears during clinic patient encounters.
  4. Students will develop their own slate of outpatient hematology and oncology patients on a continuity basis for the 4 weeks of their elective, covering a broad variety of childhood blood disorders and malignancies.
  5. Weekly test modules to discuss specific cases will be expected of the learner, week 1 is hemophilia and coagulation disorders, week 2 oncology cases, week 3 sickle cell cases and week 4 benign hematology cases.
