Surgery Curriculum

Young SurgeonCurriculum PGY-1 Level Surgery Residents
Rotations, call schedules, and conference responsibilities are similar for PGY-1 level Surgery residents. The usual first-year experience includes:

 

Categorical
Trauma Service ................... 2 - 4 months

Surgery Resident Service .. 2 - 4 months
(Includes patients who are the primary responsibility of the Surgery residents)

Faculty Surgery Service ..... 4 - 6 months

 

Preliminary Surgery
Trauma Service ................... 3 months

Surgery Resident Service .. 2 - 3 months
(Includes patients who are the primary responsibility of the Surgery residents)

Faculty Surgery Service ....... 4 - 6 months

Pediatric Surgery .................. 0 - 1 month

Anesthesiology ..................... 1 - 2 months

 

Note that Preliminary Surgery residents typically spend at least one month on an Anesthesiology rotation.  In the 2nd year, Categorical Surgery residents are assigned to a rotation in plastic Surgery, and in the 4th year they are assigned to a Thoracic rotation.
