Medical Student Online Handbook - Guidelines for Visiting Medical Students

The University of Tennessee College of Medicine has elective opportunities available at its sites in Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville, and Jackson for students from other medical schools. To be eligible for consideration, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Visiting students must be candidate for the MD or DO degree in good standing in an accredited medical school or from institutions with which UTHSC has a formal exchange program. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Dean of Medical Education or his/her designee.
  • Visiting students shall be limited to a maximum of 12 weeks (3 4-week rotations) of experiences during their medical school career. Electives will be assigned to visiting students only after all University of Tennessee students have been scheduled.
  • All visiting students must have:
    • coverage for malpractice/liability insurance in the amount of $1 million per incident and $3 million aggregate from their institution or from acceptable other sources,
    • health insurance,
    • required immunizations for measles and rubella,
    • completed the Hepatitis B vaccine series,
    • taken a TB skin test within the past year,
    • been certified in CPR within the past year, and
    • passed a criminal background check at the time of matriculation to medical school or more recently.
    • Mask fit test - this can be completed at Erlanger WorkForce the first week of the clinical rotation for a $25 fee to the student.
  • Visiting students must have completed instruction in the basic physical examination and have a working knowledge of general ward procedures. All electives require that the student has completed the basic Family Medicine, Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Surgery, Psychiatry, and Obstetrics-Gynecology clerkships. All students must have met the prerequisites of the elective to which they are applying.

Some departments at the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga require that visiting students must have taken and passed USMLE Step 1 in order to approve the elective request.

Note:  UT is one of 10 schools participating in a pilot project with the AAMC's Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS).  During the 2008-2009 academic year, allopathic medical students (MD) from any Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) approved medical school must apply for visiting student rotations via the VSAS system.  Click here to view the VSAS Information Page posted on the AAMC website.

If you are applying to any of these schools (including any of the University of Tennessee campuses), you must use the VSAS system:

Completed forms should be mailed to:

After the form has been processed, the student and his/her medical school will receive a copy of the approved form, and the student will receive instructions about the rotation.

It is expected that your clerkship work at any of the University of Tennessee will be part of the graduation requirements of your school. For this reason, it is essential that an authorization for taking an elective from your Dean's Office be submitted. Section II of the Visiting Student Application provides for this authorization.  Students may select from 42 electives in various specialties and subspecialties.  Our electives are equivalent to those at the main medical school campus, The University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis.

Visiting students must be in good standing in the final year at their home institutions and must be authorized to take external electives. Currently, students who are regularly enrolled in another medical school and paying tuition at that school are not charged tuition at The University of Tennessee for brief elective periods. This policy may change in the future, and the school reserves the right to charge tuition at any time.

Due to limited capacity, housing is currently unavailable for visiting students.

*We do not begin reviewing the student housing roster until thirty (30) days prior to the beginning of the rotation.  If we see any sign of housing limitations, we will notify you IMMEDIATELY.

If you do not hear from me, you will receive a "Welcome" email approximately 7-10 days prior to the beginning of the rotation, which will include detailed check-in and Orientation instructions.

Note:  If you school already requires a criminal background check, whether applying via VSAS or our paper application, the UT College of Medicine requires that you submit a copy to Kimberlee Norwood at the main medical school campus in Memphis.  You can email Ms. Norwood with any questions about the criminal background check at  Her phone # is (901) 448-3843.  Her mailing address is:

Kimberlee Norwood
UT Health Science Center
College of Medicine
910 Madison Ave., Suite 1031
Memphis, TN 38163

If your school does not require criminal background checks and your Dean's Office is not familiar with how to request one, you can go to the following website to obtain a criminal background check for medical students:  The visiting student will be responsible for the cost of the background check.  If your medical school is not listed in the drop down list as you follow the directions, select UT Health Sciences Center - Memphis/College of Medicine.
