The University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga Department of Pediatrics is based at Children's Hospital at Erlanger, a 118-bed regional tertiary care facility, including an 11-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and 60-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).  Children's Hospital is s a major component of the Erlanger Health System and is attached to the main Baroness Erlanger Campus.  Children's is the region's only pediatric teaching hospital and is designated as one of only four Comprehensive Regional Pediatric Centers in the state. The Pediatric Emergency Department is staffed by board certified pediatric emergency physicians round the clock.  More than 120,000 patient visits are logged annually in our Pediatric Emergency Department, outpatient clinics, outpatient surgery, and subspecialty practice.  There is also a cystic fibrosis center, a Children's Cancer Center, and Craniofacial Center located at Children's; thus, the volume and variety of patients available to medical students are tremendous.

The Pediatrics Clerkship can accommodate between two and eight third year students for each eight-week block.  Pediatric Clerkship students spend 1 month on the inpatient service and 1 month on the outpatient rotation.  Medical students are active members of the medical team taking care of patients.  They will be expected to learn about normal growth and development, how to evaluate children of different ages, diagnosis and treatment of common pediatric conditions and have the opportunity to be exposed to many unusual disorders.  Because of the relatively small number of students, there is a greater amount of individualized attention and responsibility that is given to each student.  There is direct faculty supervision wherever students are assigned on inpatient or outpatient services.

The Department also sponsors a Pediatrics Residency Program based at Children's Hospital at Erlanger and provides an excellent blend of academic and clinical training for 24 residents (eight residents at each of three levels).  Our program provides comprehensive training in general pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties and is one of nine residency programs sponsored in Chattanooga.  The faculty consist of 46 hospital-based physicians who represent both general pediatrics and a comprehensive list of pediatric subspecialties as well as pediatric surgery and related subspecialties.  In addition the Department has 40 volunteer faculty members who practice general practice and related subspecialties in the community.  Subspecialties include:  Adolescent Medicine, Allergy/Immunology, Ambulatory Care, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Craniofacial Surgery, Critical Care, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine,  Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Genetics, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neonatology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Psychology/Behavioral Science, Pulmonology, Radiology, and Urology.

Third year medical students at UT College of Medicine Chattanooga are in an integrated part of the health care team which includes 24 pediatric residents and more than 50 full time general pediatric and subspecialty faculty members. Students spend 1 month on the inpatient service and 1 month on the outpatient rotation. Medical students are active members of the medical team taking care of patients. They will be expected to learn about normal growth and development, how to evaluate children of different ages, diagnosis and treatment of common pediatric conditions and have the opportunity to be exposed to many unusual disorders. Because of the relatively small number of students, there is a great amount of individualized attention and responsibility that is given to each student. There is direct faculty supervision wherever students are assigned on inpatient or outpatient services. Students also attend morning reports, Grand Rounds, didactic conferences, and dedicated student teaching sessions.
