Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

 

Erlanger's Hyperbaric Oxygen facility is Tennessee's only Level 1 facility accredited by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), and only one of 36 in the United States. We offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy using three Sechrist 32 monoplace chambers capable of providing treatment up to 3.0 ATA.  Our coverage is 24/7 and we provide full critical care services, including respiratory support, invasive blood pressure monitoring, and titration of vasoactive infusion which can be continued while the patient receives hyperbaric oxygen treatments.

 

James H. Creel, Jr, MD, FACEP, Diplomat of Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine and other faculty trained in Hyperbaric Medicine provide medical oversight.  The facility is staffed by certified Hyperbaric technologists and certified Hyperbaric nurses. In addition to direct patient care, the facility actively participates in clinical research trials.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Indications for which we use hyperbaric oxygen therapy include:

 

Emergency indications

  • Air or other gas embolism
  • Carbon monoxide poisioning, with or without cyanide poisoning
  • Clostridial monecrosis (gas gangrene)
  • Crush injuries and other traumatic ischemias
  • Decompression illness
  • Exceptional blood loss anemia
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections (Fournier's Gangrene necrotizing fasciitis)

Non-emergency indications

  • Enhancement of healing in selected problem wounds in diabetic patients
  • Late effects of radiation to normal tissue (soft tissue and bond necrosis)
  • Rescue therapy of compromised skin grafts and flaps
  • Refractory deep fungal infections (mucormycosis,aspergillosis, coccidiomycosis)
  • Refractory osteomyelitis
