Medical Student Elective Catalog: ORS3-4010/F Orthopaedic Surgery - CHATT

The Orthopaedic Surgery elective provides clinical experience on an active teaching service. The student will work with and assist residents under faculty supervision. The student will learn how to conduct a history and physical examination of the musculoskeletal system, how to develop the diagnosis and treatment plan for assigned patients, and basic orthopedic radiology. The student will learn basic principles of fracture care. The student will have patient contact in the Emergency Room, in-patient wards, orthopaedic clinic and operating rooms. Regular teaching rounds and conferences will be required.


Medical students from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine are encouraged to apply for this elective at the UT College of Medicine Chattanooga. They must meet the same criteria as non-UT applicants for the elective to receive an interview for residency.  Students from other medical schools must apply and meet the criteria below to be accepted for the elective rotation.  Contact Orthopaedic Residency Coordinator, Donna Gibson ( to request elective application forms.


The ideal candidate for an elective and residency is academically excellent while showing interest, energy and initiative on their rotations.  Integration and fit with our residents and faculty are very important to us.  Students will rotate with the Program Director, the Orthopaedic Trauma service and two other rotations.  We strive to include all interview committee faculty on the rotation.


Additional Criteria for Orthopaedic Surgery Elective and Residency:
Applicants for both the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency and the Orthopaedic Surgery Medical Student Elective will be considered only if they meet eligibility requirements for residency established by the ACGME and our institution, the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga.  In addition, applicants must meet the following:


Step I USMLE - score of at least 230 on first attempt 

Step II USMLE - score of at least 230 on first attempt*
(*may adversely affect applicant if Step II scores are not available) 

Member of current year's graduating class 

Ranked within the top 25% their graduating class.
